Refill stations: are they worth keeping from a brand's point of view?
Refill stations for shampoo and body wash in big stores and zero-waste shops are more common than a few years ago. But brands that have run them seem divided on whether they pay off.
The case for
- Shows sustainability through action, not just words
- Refill visits bring customers back to the store
- Some packaging cost can be saved
The difficulties people mention
- Hygiene and quality: keeping container cleaning and after-opening use guidance consistent in-store is hard
- Labeling: refilled products still need ingredient lists, dates and other info delivered somehow
- Space and staff: training, cleaning dispensers and other hidden running costs
- Real usage: interest is high, but people report repeat visits lower than hoped
Refill usually starts with rinse-off categories like cleansers, and expanding to skincare tends to be approached more cautiously.
If you have run or considered a refill station, what was the biggest obstacle?
