"Microbiome skincare": where R&D and marketing see it differently

Microbiome shows up in almost every new product brief these days. But R&D and marketing tend to read the word very differently.

Where the friction usually is

  • Very different ingredients share one label: lactobacillus ferment lysates, prebiotic sugars and heat-killed postbiotics all get called "microbiome". Shoppers easily assume live bacteria are inside.
  • What was actually shown: supplier data is usually on the raw material. Whether the finished product does the same is a separate question, R&D teams point out.
  • Where the wording line sits: claims like barrier support need evidence and the right regulatory scope, and a number like "more good bacteria" usually needs a finished-product test.
  • Preservation: consumers keep asking how a bacteria-friendly concept fits with a preservative system that has to work.

Marketing often says "people already search for this word", and R&D answers "which is exactly why we should use it precisely".

When your team uses a microbiome concept, where have you drawn the line?
