EU microplastics rules: rinse-off products have until October 2027
The EU's microplastics restriction (Regulation 2023/2055), adopted in 2023, gives cosmetics different sell-by deadlines depending on product type. If you export to Europe, now is the time to plan reformulation backwards from those dates.
Cosmetics deadlines per the European Commission
- Rinse-off products(cleansers, shampoos, body washes): may be solduntil October 16, 2027
- Leave-on products(creams, serums, lotions):until October 16, 2029
- Make-up, lip and nail products: until October 16, 2035, but from October 17, 2031 they need a label saying they contain microplastics to stay on sale
- Exfoliating microbeads and loose glitter were already restricted when the rule took effect
