Working with overseas creators: where ingredient explanations get lost in translation

When brands collaborate with creators abroad, a surprising number of problems come from translating ingredient and benefit explanations. Korean materials get passed along as-is and end up meaning something quite different on camera.

Where it often goes wrong

  • Ingredient nicknames: centella, cica and "tiger grass" can all mean the same material, and creators sometimes think they are different ones.
  • Functional cosmetics: Korea's functional cosmetic category often has no direct equivalent abroad, so a literal translation can sound like a drug claim.
  • Benefit nuance: words like soothing or renewal can become stronger, medical-sounding terms in translation.
  • Concentrations: mixing up raw-material percentage with active content can inflate the numbers.

Tips people share

  • Send a short sheet of phrases to use and phrases to avoid for each country
  • Standardize ingredient names on INCI
  • Have a local team member check at least the captions before posting
