Greener packaging: if you could change just one thing first, what would it be?

Everyone wants sustainable packaging, but budgets and timelines are limited. Among brand managers, "what do we change first?" always splits the room.

Options that come up most

  • Mono-material: matching pump, cap and bottle materials so sorting and recycling are easier. Parts like pump springs are often called hard to replace.
  • Recycled content (PCR): cutting virgin plastic. Color and clarity can shift, and supply is a variable.
  • Less over-packaging: dropping the outer carton or reducing fillers, a relatively quick change, though some worry about losing shelf presence.
  • Refill launches: keep the main bottle and sell pouch refills. The key question is how many buyers actually come back for refills.

Whichever you pick, a shared view is that wording should never overstate recyclability.

If your brand could do only one this year, which would you choose?
