Korea is missing from Japan’s imported fragrance market. Could K-fragrance work?
In Japan's imported cosmetics data, Korea holds 43.3% of skincare and was the only major country growing in color makeup. Yet in fragrance Korea doesn't appear in the top ranks, while France holds 62.6%.
A country that leads in skincare and makeup barely registers in fragrance. That's an interesting gap.
Explanations you often hear in the industry
- Fragrance sells on heritage, so new brands struggle to earn trust
- Korean strengths like fast formula innovation and value pricing matter less in perfume
- On the flip side, some see room for skincare-style scent products: solid perfumes, hair and body mists, small layering sizes
- Reliance on overseas raw materials and perfumers, plus regulation (expanding fragrance-allergen labeling), add weight
A question for anyone hunting for K-beauty's next category:
What would K-fragrance need first to work abroad? Pick one of brand story, price point, product format or retail channel, and tell us why.
