Changdeokgung Secret Garden: how the 6-day booking window actually works

Changdeokgung's Secret Garden (Huwon) is the best-preserved of Korea's royal gardens, and one of the few sights in Seoul where a bit of advance planning genuinely matters. Unlike the palace's main halls, the garden can't be wandered freely — visitors join a fixed group tour with a guide, a rule meant to protect the centuries-old trees and pavilions.

Booking: online reservations for any given day open at 10am (Korea time) exactly six days ahead, and only sessions within that six-day window are bookable. Each tour is capped at 100 people, with roughly half the spots sold online and the rest sold on-site, first come first served. The Secret Garden ticket is separate from regular Changdeokgung admission — you need both. From March to November there are 12 sessions a day (4 with English commentary); from December to February that drops to 10 sessions a day (1 in English).

Travelers who've done it say the photos undersell how it actually feels to visit, but also warn that the meeting point is more than a 15-minute walk from the main gate, so build in time to get there. Mobile tickets are checked on-screen, not as a screenshot, and Changdeokgung is closed every Monday except on special holidays.

Practical info: book through the Korea Heritage Service's integrated reservation site (royal.khs.go.kr), which requires creating an account first. Arrive at least 30 minutes early since the meeting point is deep inside the grounds.

Nearby: Changdeokgung's main halls are worth half a day on their own, and nearby Jongmyo Shrine also takes online bookings for its own guided tours.

Did you manage to book the Secret Garden — was the online system or on-site queue easier for you?
