How do you explain "biotech" ingredients to shoppers?
Fermentation, recombinant proteins, cell-culture extracts: supplier catalogs are full of ingredients labeled "biotech" these days. But brand teams say explaining them on a product page is where things get stuck.
Why it is hard
- "Biotech" covers too much: traditional ferment extracts and microbially produced actives end up under one word.
- Complex process, simple question: shoppers care less about how it is made and more about "so what does it do for my skin?"
- Confusion with "natural": brands disagree on whether to present these as natural or as tech ingredients.
- Claim limits: copying supplier brochure lines straight onto the page can clash with cosmetic advertising rules.
Approaches people often use
- Keep the production method to one sentence, and explain why that method was chosen instead (purity, supply stability, replacing an animal-derived source)
- List the trade name next to the INCI name so shoppers can check it themselves
