Why do Korean and European sunscreens feel lighter? It's partly about allowed UV filters

When K-beauty fans abroad explain why they buy Korean sunscreen, the top answer is "light and no white cast."Formulation skill is part of it, but so is the fact thateach country allows different UV filters.

Why the gap exists

  • In Korea and the EU sunscreen is regulated as a cosmetic (or functional cosmetic), while in the US it's an over-the-counter drug
  • Adding a new filter in the US was slow and demanding, so the US list barely changed for a long time

Filters you often see on Korean ingredient lists

  • Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (Tinosorb S), only added in the US in 2026
  • Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate (Uvinul A Plus)
  • Methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol (Tinosorb M)
  • Ethylhexyl triazone (Uvinul T 150)

Formulators often say these filters make it easier to cover UVA broadly with lighter textures.

Worth remembering

  • A different list doesn't automatically mean one side is safer
  • What matters most is using enough, consistently

Do you check the filter names when you pick a sunscreen?
