Slugging: who it helps, who should skip it
Slugging means finishing your night routine with a thin layer of an occlusive like petrolatum, so water has a harder time leaving the skin. It went viral on TikTok, but the idea is old: dermatologists have used occlusives on dry, irritated skin for decades.
Who it tends to suit
- Very dry or flaky skin, especially in winter or heated rooms
- Skin that feels tight after a strong active or a windy day
- Dry patches around the nose and mouth
Who usually skips it
- Acne-prone or very oily skin: many people on skincare forums report more clogged pores
- Anyone right after a retinoid or acid: sealing it in can make irritation stronger
- Humid climates, where it often just feels heavy
Common tips: use a pea-sized amount, only on dry zones if needed, and keep the pillowcase clean.
Have you tried slugging, and did it work for your skin type?
