Korea in winter: what to pack for cold streets and hot indoors

Winter trips to Korea get a lot of questions from people coming from warm countries. The two things travellers mention most: the wind outside​andhow warm and dry it is indoors.

Clothing that people say works

• Layers you can peel off: thermal top, sweater, long padded coat. Subway cars, shops and cafés are heated, so you will be taking things off constantly.

• Warm, grippy shoes. Icy pavements and hilly alleys are common.

• Hat, gloves and a scarf or neck warmer. The wind along the river can bite.

Small things that make a difference

• Hand warmers (핫팩) from any convenience store.

• A rich moisturiser, lip balm and hand cream, since heated rooms dry skin out.

• A small tote to carry the layers you take off.

Planning tips

• Daylight is shorter, so put outdoor sights early and save markets, museums and cafés for the evening.

• Many hotels have ondol floor heating; if the room feels too dry, a wet towel over a chair is a common trick.
