Toner pads 101: soothing vs exfoliating, and how not to overdo them

Toner pads are one of the most-hauled K-beauty formats right now. They look alike in the jar, but they fall into two very different groups.

1. Soothing or hydrating pads Usually built around calming extracts like heartleaf, centella or mugwort, plus humectants. Many people use them as a quick toner step or leave one on a red area for a few minutes as a mini mask.

2. Exfoliating pads These contain acids such as AHA, BHA, PHA or gluconolactone, and often a textured side. They are closer to a chemical exfoliant than a toner.

How people avoid trouble

  • Read the ingredient list, not just the name
  • Use exfoliating pads a few times a week at first, not daily by default
  • Don't stack them with retinoids or other acids on the same night
  • Swipe gently; rubbing hard with the textured side is a common cause of redness
  • Wear sunscreen the next day

Which kind do you keep in your bathroom, and how often do you use it?
