FDA approves its first new sunscreen filter in about 20 years: bemotrizinol
In June 2026 the US FDA added bemotrizinol to the list of allowed over-the-counter sunscreen actives. It's the first new filter the US has accepted in roughly two decades.
The essentials
- Allowed at up to 6%
- Covers both UVA and UVB, and the FDA notes it has low skin absorption
- Approved for adults and children 6 months and older
- Proposed in December 2025, finalized about seven months later
Old news for K-beauty fans You may know it as Tinosorb S. Europe has used it for a long time, and it shows up on plenty of Korean sunscreen ingredient lists under its long chemical name. It's one reason many Americans have been ordering Korean and European sunscreens online.
Approval doesn't mean US shelves change overnight. Brands still need to formulate and launch products, which takes time.
