Autumn and winter in Korea: which kind of festival would you plan around?

From late autumn into winter, a lot of travellers start building trips around seasonal events rather than sights. The ones that come up again and again in travel threads:

• Lantern displays along Seoul's Cheonggyecheon stream, usually held in the colder months.
• Christmas and year-end light shows on department store facades and shopping streets.
• Winter festivals outside Seoul, from ice fishing to snow events in Gangwon, typically in January.
• Ski and snowboard trips to resorts a few hours from the capital.

A planning tip: exact dates for many events are only confirmed by the organisers a few weeks or months ahead, so check the official festival page or VisitSeoul/Visit Korea before booking flights around them, and have a backup plan in case weather changes the schedule.
