Rice in K-beauty: rice water, bran, ferment — what's actually different
"Rice" on a label can mean several different ingredients. Here is a quick way to tell them apart.
Rice extract / rice water Water-based extracts of the grain. They add light hydration and a soft, smooth feel. Traditional stories about washing the face with rice-rinsing water gave this ingredient its fame.
Rice bran extract or oil From the outer layer of the grain. Bran contains natural antioxidants, and the oil is a light emollient often seen in cleansing oils and creams.
Fermented rice (sake, rice ferment filtrate) Rice broken down by yeast or bacteria. Brands describe ferments as gentler and richer in small molecules; the research behind specific claims varies a lot by product.
Rice starch and rice powder Used for oil absorption and a matte, velvety finish, often in powders and some sunscreens.
Things to keep in mind
- Where the ingredient sits on the INCI list gives a hint of how much is in there
- Homemade rice water isn't preserved, so it spoils quickly
