Fine all summer, then autumn hits and the breakouts start

Every September and October, skincare forums fill with posts along the lines of "why is my chin suddenly breaking out?" The usual explanations fall into a few groups.

Theories people keep coming back to

  • Dry on the surface, oily underneath: the air dries out but the summer routine (light gel, strong cleanser) stays the same
  • A sudden jump to heavy cream: switching to a rich cream overnight and then seeing more tiny bumps
  • Over-exfoliating: skin looks dull, so an acid toner goes into daily use
  • Life changes: new term, new job, big day-night temperature swings and messier sleep

The order most people suggest

  1. Make cleansing one step gentler
  2. Add moisture in light layers first
  3. Introduce one new product at a time

If breakouts last or turn painful and swollen, see a dermatologist first.

Does your skin act up when the season changes? What is the first thing you adjust?
