Dupe threads are some of the busiest posts on beauty forums right now. Someone finds a cheaper product that feels like a cult favourite, and the comments explode.
In K-beauty the debate has an extra twist. Korea has large contract manufacturers (ODM/OEM) that make products for many brands, so people often wonder whether two products simply came off the same line.
Arguments you usually see:
- Pro dupe: similar texture and key ingredients for less money, and the expensive version is mostly paying for marketing
- Against: the same manufacturer does not mean the same formula; concentration, pH, stabilisers and testing can all differ
- Middle ground: fine for basics like cleansers and moisturisers, riskier for sunscreen, where the tested SPF is what matters
A useful habit many people mention: compare the full ingredient list and the order, not just the hero ingredient on the front.
