Vitamin C and niacinamide "cancel each other out"? The myth that won't die

Few skincare rules get repeated as often as "never use vitamin C with niacinamide." It still shows up in comment sections and TikTok videos.

Where the idea came from Older lab work looked at the two ingredients in pure, heated solutions and noted that niacinamide could convert to niacin, which may cause temporary flushing. Those conditions don't really match a modern serum sitting on your shelf.

What most cosmetic chemists say today

  • In current formulas, the combination is generally considered fine
  • Plenty of products already contain both
  • The real issue for some people is irritation, especially from low-pH pure ascorbic acid, not a chemical "cancel out"

Practical approaches people use

  • Layer them if your skin tolerates both
  • Split them (vitamin C in the morning, niacinamide at night) if you get tingling or redness
  • Introduce one at a time so you know which one bothers you

Did you ever avoid this pair because of the myth? What other "never mix" rule do you want checked?
