Tone-up creams: skincare, sunscreen or sneaky makeup?
Walk into any Korean beauty shop and you will find tone-up creams: white or pastel-tinted lotions that brighten the look of skin instantly. Many double as sunscreen. The debate is what they actually are.
The case for "makeup":
-
The brightening is optical, usually from white pigments, and washes off.
-
On deeper skin tones some formulas leave a grey or ashy cast.
The case for "skincare / sun care":
-
Many are sold with an SPF and used as the last step of a morning routine.
-
People who skip foundation like them as a light, even base.
Things buyers often mention:
-
A lavender tint targets sallowness, green targets redness, peach suits warmer tones.
-
Check whether the SPF is tested on the product itself, and apply enough if you rely on it.
-
Some formulas pill over heavy serums.
For many people, a tone-up cream is where "no-makeup makeup" starts.
Do you count tone-up cream as makeup? And has anyone found one that works on deeper skin?
