Myth check: "natural" and "plant-based" don't automatically mean gentle
K-beauty is full of plant extracts, and labels love words like "natural" or "clean." It's easy to assume that means kinder to sensitive skin. That isn't always true.
Why plant-based can still irritate
- Many plant extracts contain natural fragrance compounds (from essential oils like lavender, citrus or tea tree) that are common triggers for sensitive skin
- Extracts are complex mixes, not single ingredients, so reactions are harder to predict
- "Natural" has no strict legal definition on most cosmetic labels
Why "synthetic" isn't automatically bad
- Lab-made ingredients can be very pure and well studied
- Many gentle staples, like panthenol or some ceramides, are made in a lab
What helps more than the word "natural"
- Read the full ingredient list, especially near the top
- Look for fragrance or essential oils if your skin is reactive
- Patch test a new product on a small area for a few days
What's a "natural" product that surprised you, in a good or bad way? Tell us what happened and your skin type.
