91.6% of surveyed dermatologists are worried about long skincare routines

A 2026 survey of Dutch dermatologists put numbers on something forums argue about constantly: are long routines doing more harm than good?

What 168 respondents (146 dermatologists, 22 residents) said:

  • 91.6% were concerned about the popularity of multi-step routines
  • 88.1% regularly see skin problems linked to skincare, such as irritant eczema, perioral dermatitis and allergic reactions
  • Only 12.5% actively recommend structured multi-step routines
  • 79.8% still saw an upside: people are more aware of their skin

Retinoids, exfoliating acids and fragrance were the ingredients most often linked to problems.

For K-beauty fans this is interesting, because the category is famous for layering. Many people say their skin calmed down once they cut back. Others say light, gentle layers work fine.

How many steps is your routine right now, and has that number gone up or down?
