Cleansing balm, oil or cleansing water: which first cleanser suits you?
The first step of a double cleanse comes in three popular Korean formats. They all remove sunscreen and makeup, but they feel very different.
Cleansing oil
- Liquid, spreads fast, good for heavier makeup
- Emulsifies (turns milky) when you add water, then rinses
- Some people with acne-prone skin prefer to rinse very thoroughly or skip oils
Cleansing balm
- Solid in the jar, melts into an oil on the skin
- Travel-friendly, no spills
- Can feel richer; again, emulsify with water before rinsing
Cleansing water (micellar)
- Swiped on with a cotton pad, no rinse needed by design
- Handy for light makeup or quick removal
- Many people still follow with a gentle cleanser or rinse, and rubbing hard with pads can irritate
Common mistakes forums mention
- Not emulsifying oil or balm, leaving a greasy film
- Massaging too little on waterproof products
- Using cotton pads with a lot of pressure around the eyes
