Is SPF 50+ enough, or do you need a higher number?
Abroad you'll see SPF 70 or even 100, while most Korean sunscreens simply say SPF 50+. That sparks a recurring debate: "Isn't a higher number always better?"
Useful background
- Korea, the EU and others group everything above a certain level as "50+"
- SPF mainly describes UVB protection, so UVA needs to be checked separately
- The general explanation is that as the number climbs, the extra protection gets smaller and smaller
Two camps in the community
- "Nobody applies the recommended amount, so a higher number gives a safety margin"
- "Amount and reapplication matter far more. Feeling safe with a big number and applying less is the bigger risk"
Where this meets recent controversy
- With overseas tests finding labeled SPF didn't match measured values, people are also asking how much to trust the label number at all
What most people agree on: the best sunscreen is one you'll apply generously and reapply.
How much attention do you pay to the SPF number?
