Oily skin in summer: how can you wear a cushion foundation without it coming off?
Cushion foundations are lightweight and convenient, but oily skin tends to get patchy in summer. In fact, long-lasting base makeup depends more on the prep beforehand.
Base Makeup Routine for Oily Skin
- Use a lightweight moisturizer and wait 3–5 minutes
- Apply an oil-control primer only to the T-zone
- Apply the cushion foundation in small amounts, pressing rather than dragging

For oily skin in summer, the goal with a cushion foundation isn’t to “dry out” your face, but to keep your base makeup from fighting with excess oil: after skincare, wait for your sunscreen to form a film, then gently press a tissue against the sides of your nose and your forehead. Don’t layer on too many creams or primers. Don’t skimp on sunscreen to make your makeup last; apply a sufficient amount according to the product instructions, then wait a few minutes before applying makeup.
Use a puff to press on a small amount of cushion foundation at a time, starting with a thin layer from the center of your face. Finish the sides of your nose and the corners of your mouth with the leftover product on the puff; rubbing back and forth can cause your sunscreen and base makeup to pill. Then gently press translucent powder (파우더) onto areas prone to oiliness—don’t sweep on a thick layer all over your face. Before touching up, use a tissue or blotting paper to press away the shine, then apply a small amount of foundation. Layering cushion foundation directly on top often makes your makeup thicker and patchier with each touch-up.
If your makeup keeps lifting in the same spot, first check whether you’ve layered too much skincare, sunscreen, and base makeup, or haven’t waited long enough; “long-wear makeup primer” doesn’t necessarily work for everyone, so it’s best to try it on a small area first.
