My cushion foundation gets darker by the afternoon (darkening) — what could be causing it?

When a cushion foundation looks just right in the morning but a shade darker and duller after lunch, it’s commonly called “darkening.” It often happens when it mixes with sebum.

Rather than the cushion foundation’s pigments themselves changing, darkening often occurs because, over time, sebum and sweat mix with the base makeup, making the surface look shinier or as if it has oxidized, and therefore duller. It can be more noticeable in oily areas, and if you choose a shade that is lighter than your skin or strongly yellow-toned to begin with, the difference may look more pronounced in the afternoon.

First, test it along your jawline, wait 10–15 minutes, and check the color; I recommend checking once more in the shade. When applying, wait until your skincare has fully absorbed, then apply a thin layer. Use less on the T-zone, then gently press with a tissue to remove excess oil. Applying too much powder can make your makeup look duller, so use only a small amount on areas where needed.

Even the same cushion foundation can look different depending on the season and your skincare combination. When touching up around lunchtime, blot away shine first before applying more; this can help keep your makeup from getting too thick.

    1. My cushion foundation always looks dull on oily skin. Should I switch to liquid foundation?

You don’t necessarily need to switch. Darkening depends on more than whether you use cushion or liquid foundation; it’s also related to how much oil your skin produces, your base makeup shade, and the skincare products you layer. Liquid foundation can darken just as much if it’s too moisturizing or prone to oxidation. You can try a simple test first: after skincare, wait until the products have mostly absorbed, then apply a thin layer of cushion foundation on one side of your jaw and liquid foundation on the other. Compare the colors in natural light after about 15 minutes. Choose a shade closer to your neck, rather than picking one that’s too light or too yellow just to look fairer right after application.

If you still want to try liquid foundation, look for a lightweight, long-wearing formula and apply a small amount to each area. Apply less to the T-zone and set specific areas with a small amount of loose powder. At lunchtime, gently blot away the oiliness with a tissue before considering a touch-up; this is usually less likely to make your makeup look ashy than layering more directly on top. You can also try changing how you apply or set your makeup first; there’s no need to replace your entire base routine right away.
