Propolis and honey in K-beauty: the "bee" ingredients explained
Amber-colored "propolis" toners and ampoules have been K-beauty staples for years, and they keep showing up in haul videos. Here's what the bee-derived ingredients are.
Propolis extract A resin bees make from plant material to seal their hives. In skincare it's used for its antioxidant compounds and is often marketed for a calm, glowy look. Many products blend it with honey or royal jelly.
Honey A natural humectant, so it helps attract water to the skin. It also gives formulas a slightly sticky, cushiony feel that some people love and others don't.
Royal jelly A secretion fed to queen bees, mostly marketed for nourishment. Evidence for skin-specific benefits is limited.
Things to know before buying
- Allergy risk: people allergic to bee products, pollen or certain plant resins can react to propolis. Patch testing matters here
- Texture tends to be richer, which some oily-skin users say feels heavy in summer
- Vegan shoppers usually avoid these ingredients
Is propolis a holy grail for you, or did it not work with your skin?
