Why does a Korean product cost double where you live? Let's talk

It's one of the most common complaints in K-beauty groups in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina or Spain: the toner that's a casual buy in Seoul turns into a treat back home.

The reasons that usually come up:

• International shipping and sometimes several middlemen before it reaches the shop.
• Import taxes and duties, which vary a lot by country.
• Health registration and local labelling: formal importers have paperwork that costs time and money.
• Exchange rates: when the local currency moves, so does the shelf price.
• Social media demand: viral items sometimes get pricier before the hype fades.

Still, some products arrive at reasonable prices thanks to official distributors or chains that import in volume.
