Sugar and skin ageing: what a new lab study actually found
Headlines saying sugar ages your skin are everywhere. A peer-reviewed study highlighted by The Estée Lauder Companies in April 2026 adds a more specific piece.
What the research looked at:
- Glycation, where sugar binds to proteins and forms end products
- Human dermal fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen) exposed to fructose in the lab
What it reported:
- Glycation happened inside the cells, not only on their surface
- It fed a cycle of inflammation and cellular senescence, and the cells grew more slowly, moved less and lost regenerative capacity
What it does not say: this is cell research, not a diet trial on people. It does not show that a given amount of dessert changes your face, and it comes from a company that sells skincare.
It is still a useful reminder that 'anti-glycation' is a real research area, not just a marketing word.
Have you ever changed your diet for your skin? Did you notice anything?
