Morning or night? Where the common actives usually go in a routine
One of the most frequent routine-order questions: which actives belong in the morning and which at night? There isn't one law, but most skincare guides land on a similar map.
Usually morning
- Antioxidants like vitamin C: often used under sunscreen to add daytime support
- Sunscreen: always the last skincare step in the morning
Usually night
- Retinoids (retinol, retinal): light can break some of them down, and they can make skin more sun-sensitive
- Exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA, PHA): many prefer night so the skin can rest before the next day
- Spicule serums and other strong treatments
Either time
- Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, ceramides, peptides and most calming ingredients
Simple layering order people follow Cleanser, toner, thinnest serums, thicker treatments, moisturizer, then sunscreen in the morning or an occlusive at night if needed.
One rule of thumb: avoid stacking several strong actives in the same routine; spread them across days instead.
How do you split your actives between AM and PM?
