Euljiro's 'Hipjiro' alleys: printing shops by day, hidden bars by night
Euljiro doesn't look like a nightlife district at first glance. By day it's still full of small printing shops and metal workshops that have operated there since the late 1960s — paper stacked on the pavement, delivery carts squeezing through narrow lanes. Locals have taken to calling the newer, buzzier corner of it "Hipjiro," a play on the Korean word for hip layered onto the neighbourhood's name.
The stretch that draws most visitors runs roughly from Euljiro 3-ga to Euljiro 4-ga. During the day it's still a working printing district; once evening comes, unmarked doors on upper floors of old buildings turn into small bars and cafés, many with no signage at all, tucked into buildings that still house workshops downstairs. Nogari-golmok, a nearby alley of outdoor tables serving dried pollack snacks with beer, is one of the more famous anchors in the area and gets packed by early evening.
Visitors who've written about it describe a genuine "hidden in plain sight" feeling — you often need a map app open just to find the right building, let alone the right floor. Several travel write-ups mention specific spots like a gallery café or a bar where the bartender speaks English and can tailor a drink, alongside more atmospheric ones with a particular gimmick like beach sound loops or curated hi-fi audio. The flip side mentioned in write-ups: it's easy to feel lost among unmarked doors, and a few of these bars can fill up fast with limited seating once word gets around.
Practical info: the area centres on Euljiro 3(sam)-ga Station and Euljiro 4(sa)-ga Station (Line 2/Line 5), a few subway stops from Myeongdong; the printing shops keep daytime weekday hours, while the bars and cafés generally open only in the evening, so timing your visit matters — go in daylight to see the printing district, come back after dark for the bar scene. Few venues take reservations, so expect to wander and pick what looks open.
Nearby: Myeongdong is a short subway ride away, and Nogari-golmok itself is worth pairing with a walk through the surrounding printing alleys.
Do you prefer discovering a no-signage bar by wandering, or looking one up in advance?
