Five is a fun limit, but the best shelf is the one that covers your basics without making every night a chemistry experiment. If you’re sharing yours, include product names (or key ingredients), when you use each one, and whether anything tends to sting or pill—that makes feedback much more useful.
For a simple order: cleanser → watery toner/essence → treatment → moisturiser → sunscreen in the morning. At night, sunscreen drops out; you can keep the same order otherwise. A toner is optional, not a required step, and a treatment doesn’t need to be used every day. If yours includes a retinoid or exfoliating acid, ease in and avoid stacking several potentially irritating actives in the same routine at first. Sunscreen is the one step to apply generously in the morning, with reapplication when you’re outdoors for a while.
What are your five, and which one would you keep if you had to cut the shelf to one?
Gel cleanser, niacinamide toner, azelaic acid serum, ceramide cream, chemical sunscreen. Anything I should be careful combining?
That lineup is pretty straightforward: niacinamide and azelaic acid are generally fine in the same routine, and ceramides can help keep the routine comfortable. The main thing to watch is irritation, especially if the azelaic serum is new or fairly strong—start every other night (or less often if needed), then adjust based on how your skin feels. You can layer toner → azelaic serum → cream; in the morning, finish with sunscreen. If you notice persistent stinging, redness, or peeling, pause the active and simplify for a bit. Also, “chemical” sunscreen doesn’t need to be separated from these ingredients; apply it as your final morning skincare step.
