Basic Routine for Oily Skin — Save This for Later
For oily skin, balancing oil and moisture is key, rather than "washing everything off." If you cleanse until your skin feels squeaky clean, it can actually become oilier.
Oily Skin Routine
Morning
- Gel cleanser (or lukewarm water)
- Light hydrating toner
- Niacinamide serum
- Gel cream
- Lightweight sunscreen
Evening
- Cleansing oil/water
- Low-pH foam cleanser
- BHA (2–3 times a week)
- Gel cream
If you skip moisturizer because your skin feels oily, it can easily become dehydrated.

One thing to add to the template: Oily skin doesn't mean you need to skip moisturizer or sun protection. Rather than adding more steps at first, try starting with this simple routine.
Morning: Lukewarm water or a gentle gel cleanser → lightweight lotion or gel moisturizer → sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. If your skin has very little oil in the morning, rinsing with water alone may be enough.
Evening: If you applied sunscreen thoroughly, wash gently with a cleanser and finish with the same moisturizer. If tightness or stinging persists after cleansing, it may be a sign that the cleanser is too strong or that you're cleansing too often.
If oiliness bothers you, you could consider a product containing niacinamide, but it's generally best not to add several actives at once and to start with a low concentration while monitoring how your skin responds. You don't need to start using exfoliating ingredients every day, either. Introduce new products one at a time, and consult a dermatologist if you experience persistent irritation or sudden changes in your skin.
