Panthenol and madecassoside: the quiet workhorses in K-beauty "repair" creams
Look at the back of many Korean "repair," "cica" or "barrier" creams and two names show up again and again: panthenolandmadecassoside. They're less flashy than PDRN, but they're everywhere for a reason.
Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5)
- A humectant that helps skin hold water and feel softer
- Widely used in products for dry, tight or irritated-feeling skin
- Generally well tolerated, which is why it shows up in baby and post-procedure care too
Madecassoside
- One of the purified compounds from centella asiatica
- A common pick in soothing products for skin that looks red or stressed
- Often paired with other centella compounds like asiaticoside
How people tend to use these creams
- As the last step at night when skin feels over-exfoliated
- Alongside retinoids, to make the routine easier to tolerate
- On rough patches during cold or windy weather
