There are more places to hear about products than ever, and more noise. Before ordering, people usually check:

• Influencer reviews: you see it on skin, but check whether it's sponsored
• Ingredient breakdowns: show the formula logic, not whether it suits you
• Ordinary user reviews: lots of them and realistic, but skin types vary
• Testing in store: the most reassuring, but not always possible
• Friends' recommendations: you know their skin, so it's useful context
