Breakouts and dryness at the same time in your 40s: which moisturiser?

A Mumsnet user in her mid-40s, going through perimenopause, described a frustrating mix: blackheads and deeper hormonal spots on one side, and skin that was getting drier, sore and more sensitive on the other. She could not tolerate sunscreen or tretinoin well and wanted a nourishing moisturiser with some anti-ageing benefit that would not clog pores.

There were 22 replies, and a few clear favourites:

  • La Roche-Posay Effaclar (the H moisturiser and the Mat day cream) was recommended most, since the range is made for acne-prone skin.

  • Laneige Water Bankgot several mentions for hydrating without triggering spots, andClinique Moisture Surge for its light, non-greasy feel.

  • Korean barrier creams came up too: Aestura, Illiyoonceramide cream andDr. Althea 345 Relief Cream, suggested for moisture without heaviness.

  • Some shared ingredient rules of thumb: favour squalane, niacinamide, ceramides and hyaluronic acid; be wary of coconut oil, shea butter and heavy silicones if you clog easily.

  • Others suggested stripping the routine back while the skin barrier recovers, and one person said a change in hormone therapy, made with her doctor, settled her hormonal breakouts.

Desk note: The AAD notes that adult-onset acne is most common in women going through menopause, with fluctuating hormones among the causes. It suggests choosing moisturisers, cleansers and sunscreen labelled "non-comedogenic", "oil-free" or "won't clog pores". If breakouts keep coming despite gentle care, a dermatologist can combine treatments to bring them under control.

What moisturiser finally worked for you when your skin was both breaking out and dry?
