The “replace one step” rule is especially useful if you’re new to K-beauty: keep the rest of your routine familiar so you can tell what suits you. Share your skin type (or how it feels by midday), your main goal, and any ingredients you already avoid, and folks can suggest a sensible first pick. You don’t need to add a toner, essence, ampoule, and cream all at once—one well-chosen product is plenty for a first order.
For sunscreen, mention whether you want a lightweight finish or something more moisturizing; for hydration, say whether your current moisturizer feels too light or too heavy. If redness is sudden, painful, or persistent, it’s better to get a dermatologist’s opinion than to troubleshoot it with a shopping cart.
Combination skin, oily T-zone, dry cheeks. Goal: a sunscreen that does not pill under makeup. Where should I start?
For combo skin and makeup, start with a lightweight, fluid sunscreen rather than a rich cream—and try swapping it into your current routine before adding other new products. Apply it over a thin layer of moisturizer (or skip moisturizer on the oilier areas if your skin is comfortable), then give it a few minutes to settle before makeup. Pilling can come from layers rubbing together, so use less underneath, let each layer dry, and press foundation on instead of rubbing. Still, don’t skimp on sunscreen to avoid pilling; if the recommended amount won’t sit well, try a different formula.
When shopping in Korea, look for “선크림” (sunscreen) or “수분 선크림” (hydrating sunscreen). Patch-test first, and check that the label says SPF 30 or higher and broad-spectrum protection. If you share your current moisturizer and foundation, people can help spot a likely layering clash.
