Oily skin in humid weather: the routine that stops the 3pm shine
Humidity makes oily skin feel like it is melting by mid-afternoon. The instinct is to strip everything with harsh cleansers — which usually makes skin feel tight and oily.
Humid-weather routine for oily skin
Morning
- Gentle gel cleanser
- Light hydrating toner
- Niacinamide serum
- Oil-free gel moisturiser
- Matte or light sunscreen
Evening
- Oil cleanser (yes, even for oily skin)
- Gel cleanser

The “clean, matte, repeat” loop can leave skin feeling tight without keeping shine away. In humid weather, I’d keep the routine light and focus on managing surface oil rather than trying to dry skin out.
A simple routine
Niacinamide is another reasonable option for the look of shine, but formulas vary; start with one new product and see how your skin tolerates it. And honestly, a bit of midday glow in humid weather is normal—not a routine failure.
In an environment that’s humid like a Korean summer but has strong indoor air conditioning, many people also feel tightness later in the day. How should I adjust my routine in that case?
In that situation, rather than reducing moisturizer further just because your skin looks shiny, it’s better to start by checking whether it still feels tight right after cleansing. If your face feels comfortable in the morning, rinsing with water alone is fine; if it feels tight, try using a gentle cleanser briefly, then applying a thin layer of a lightweight gel cream. And keep using sunscreen as usual.
Try not to have the air conditioner blow directly onto your face, and if you feel tightness later in the day, instead of just spraying mist, try pressing on a very small amount of lightweight lotion or cream. Mist can evaporate quickly and actually leave your skin feeling drier. Use blotting paper by gently pressing it only on shiny areas, and it’s better not to wipe your entire face frequently.
If you’re using BHA, try reducing how often you use it or taking a break until the tightness settles down. If the tightness continues all day under the air conditioner or you also develop stinging or redness, simplify your products and consult a dermatologist.
Editors’ note: if your “oily” skin also feels tight after cleansing, it is often dehydrated rather than just oily — lighter cleansing usually helps more than stronger oil control.
