Kids and 10-step routines: where should the line be?
One debate that keeps coming back on beauty forums and in the news: children and young teens buying adult skincare, often after seeing it on social media. Store staff, parents and dermatologists have all weighed in.
The points people raise most often:
- The worry: strong actives like retinoids and exfoliating acids are made for adult concerns, and young skin usually does not need them
- The upside: learning to wash your face and wear sunscreen early is a good habit
- The social side: for many kids, a skincare shelf is about belonging, not skin
Many dermatologists say a basic kit covers most kids: a gentle cleanser, a simple moisturiser and sunscreen. Anything more is worth checking with a doctor or pharmacist. In Korea, where skincare starts young and sunscreen is everyday, the conversation looks a bit different.
If you are a parent, older sibling or were once that kid: what routine do you think makes sense for a 12-year-old?
