Is flaky makeup a dryness problem, or too many skincare layers?

On theqoo's beauty board, someone posted photos of cushion foundation lifting and flaking two days in a row and asked whether the cause was dryness or piling on too much skincare. They had used six layers: toner, serum, lotion, sunscreen, primer and cushion. In the comments they added that their skin had been stinging lately, so they were only using a gel cleanser.

The 19 replies leaned one way: this probably is not plain dryness.

  • The very first reply asked how often they exfoliate, and others agreed it looked more like a damaged barrier than lifting makeup.

  • The most repeated line: never exfoliate skin that stings.

  • People advised dropping watery layers like toner and serum in favour of a repair cream, and pausing makeup and masks for a while.

  • One person had treated just the affected patch with a panthenol ointment; another thought it could be seborrheic dermatitis and said to see a doctor.

  • The poster decided to visit a dermatologist the next day.

Desk note: The AAD says not to exfoliate skin that has cuts or sunburn, or while you are using retinoids or benzoyl peroxide, and warns that over-exfoliating can leave skin red and irritated. If stinging and flaking last more than a few days, a visit to a doctor will tell you faster whether it is a product problem or dermatitis.

When your makeup flakes, do you cut back your skincare or add more moisture?
