Ingredient Compatibility · Routine Order—Ask Away
This is a room for collecting quick questions like “Can I use these two together?” and “Is this the right order?” Turn on “Get a Gloshell answer too” in the comments and you’ll get an answer right away.
It’s fine to ask briefly. If you share the product names or photos of the full ingredient lists, whether you use them in the morning or evening, and the order of your current routine, I can give you a more accurate look at how they work together and the order to use them. If your skin is sensitive, please mention that too.
For example: “Can I use a retinol product and an AHA toner together in the evening? My current order is toner → serum → cream.” Concentrations and formulations vary by product, so rather than making a definite judgment based only on ingredient names, it’s safer to add one product at a time and stop using it if irritation occurs. If you have painful inflammation or a sudden rash, don’t try to resolve it by checking ingredient compatibility; have a dermatologist take a look.
Can I use a vitamin C serum on the same day as retinol? Would it be better to use them at different times, morning and evening?
They’re not necessarily incompatible, but rather than layering them in the same routine right from the start, I recommend using vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. This makes it easier to check how each one feels while lowering the chance of irritation. After morning vitamin C, be sure to use moisturizer and sunscreen.
If you’re already using both comfortably and the product instructions allow it, you can use them in the same routine. However, if you experience stinging, dryness, or redness, reduce how often you use them or take a break from one at a time. It’s easier to identify the cause if you add new products one at a time. Your experience may also vary depending on whether the vitamin C is a derivative or pure vitamin C, as well as the retinol concentration and how often you currently use it.
