Cushion foundation: how to use the puff so it doesn’t look cakey
Cushions are the K-beauty base. Most complaints ("cakey", "patchy") come down to technique, not the formula.

The puff works best when it’s carrying very little product. Press it lightly into the cushion, then tap once on the inside of the compact lid or the back of your hand to spread it out. Start at the center of the face and press in thin layers; use what’s left on the puff around the nose, hairline, and jaw. A swipe is more likely to disturb skincare and leave streaks.
If you need more coverage, build only over those spots after the first layer has settled. Let sunscreen and moisturizer dry down first, and blot excess shine before applying—slippery layers can make foundation bunch up. For texture or dry patches, avoid repeatedly tapping the same area; a damp sponge can gently lift excess instead.
Wash the puff regularly with a mild cleanser and let it dry fully. And don’t keep pressing a visibly dirty puff back into the cushion: it can transfer oil and residue into the compact.

For a puff you use every day, aim to wash it after 2–3 uses, and wash it right away if it has a lot of oil or foundation on it or starts to smell. The puff should be completely dry before you put it back in the cushion.
Wet it with lukewarm water, then apply a small amount of puff cleanser or a mild, neutral detergent. Clean it by gently pressing it, without rubbing. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear, press out the moisture with a towel, and let it dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated place. Hot water or wringing it out forcefully can damage the puff.
Keeping a spare puff makes it convenient to alternate while one is drying. It’s best to replace the puff if it tears or remains sticky or smelly even after washing.
