It may be common, but you don't have to put up with it every time. Especially if the red spots appear right after shaving and settle down over time, shaving friction or the habit of shaving too closely may be adding to the irritation.
First, after washing your face, thoroughly wet your facial hair with warm water. Apply a shaving product, then shave gently in the direction of hair growth. Replace the blade before it gets dull, and try to avoid going over the same area repeatedly or pulling the skin taut. After shaving, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer instead of an aftershave with a strong alcohol scent. Products containing panthenol (PANTHENOL) or glycerin (GLYCERIN) are a safe choice.
An electric razor may cause less irritation because it doesn't shave as closely, but it varies from person to person. If you have severe pain, pus, persistent redness, or recurring deep inflammation, get it checked by a dermatologist.
Is an aftershave with alcohol really that bad, or is it fine for oily skin?
Alcohol in aftershave isn’t automatically bad, and oily skin doesn’t mean it needs a drying splash. Ethanol or denatured alcohol can make a formula feel light and quick-drying, but right after shaving—when the skin barrier may already be irritated—it can sting and leave some people feeling drier or more reactive. That’s about the formula and your skin, not simply whether your skin is oily.
If yours stings, feels tight, or gets redder, switch to an alcohol-free, fragrance-free moisturizer. Glycerin or panthenol are nice supporting ingredients; a light lotion or gel can still suit oily skin. If you tolerate your current aftershave without irritation, there’s no need to ditch it just because it contains alcohol. Try it on a small area first if you’re unsure.
