Shaving and skincare: what order actually works?
A lot of irritation comes from doing things in the wrong order.
A calm shaving routine
- Wash with lukewarm water to soften hair
- Shaving gel or cream, not soap
- Shave with the grain, fresh blade
- Rinse with cool water
- Fragrance-free moisturiser
- Sunscreen in the morning

The simplest order is cleanse → shave → rinse → moisturize → sunscreen (morning). Shaving already exfoliates a little, so piling on acids or retinoids right afterward can make irritation more likely.
Use lukewarm water and a slick shaving cream or gel; shave with the grain first, using light pressure and as few passes as you can. Rinse the blade often. Afterward, rinse your face, pat dry, and apply a plain moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp. In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen once the moisturizer has settled.
If you use retinoids, AHAs, or BHAs, consider using them on a non-shaving night rather than immediately before or after shaving. For an electric shave, dry shaving usually comes before washing; follow with a gentle cleanse if there’s residue, then moisturize. Persistent burning, a sudden rash, or painful bumps are worth getting checked by a dermatologist.
