Reposting customer photos and videos: permissions small brands forget

Sharing a happy customer’s post is great social proof, but reposting it on your site, ads or product page usually needs permission.

The easy-to-miss part is that permission should cover where and how you’ll use the content—not just “can we repost this?” A customer may be fine with a tagged Story share but not a paid ad, product-page placement, cropping, or use beyond a short campaign.

A practical checklist: get a clear written yes from the person who posted it; name the channels and whether paid advertising is included; agree on duration, edits, credit/tagging, and any compensation or gifted product; and check that they actually own the photo/video and have permission from anyone else shown. Keep the original post and the permission record together, and make it easy to ask questions or withdraw future use. For minors, get a parent or guardian’s permission.

A DM can work for a small brand if it’s specific and saved, but a short form makes the scope easier to track as you grow. Also check local advertising, privacy, and endorsement-disclosure rules—especially for paid or gifted content. The poll’s options are a useful snapshot; I’d add “DM with explicit scope” as distinct from a casual repost request.
