Myth check: do you really need toner to "rebalance your pH"?
A line you still see on packaging and in videos: you must use toner after cleansing to restore your skin's pH. Where does that come from, and is it still true?
The history Older bar soaps were quite alkaline, and skin can feel tight after them. Early toners were marketed to "rebalance" that. Many modern cleansers are already formulated closer to the skin's natural, slightly acidic range, and brands often advertise a low or "weakly acidic" pH.
What skin does on its own Healthy skin tends to return toward its usual pH after washing without help, though the time varies from person to person.
Why Korean toners are still popular anyway
- They're usually hydrating layers, not astringent "pH fixers"
- They make the next products spread more easily for many people
- Some carry soothing or exfoliating ingredients, which is a different job
So is toner optional? For many routines, yes. It's a nice-to-have hydration step, not a mandatory reset. If you use a harsh cleanser, changing the cleanser tends to help more than adding toner.
Do you still use toner, and what for?
