Heading to the slopes? When winter UV can beat summer
Winter sun feels weak, so sunscreen is easy to skip. On ski slopes and snowy mountains, though, it's a different story.
Why snow calls for extra care
- Snow is known to reflect UV strongly, so you get light from above plus light bouncing up from below
- The general explanation is that UV gets stronger as altitude rises
- Cold wind means you don't feel the heat, so many people don't notice they're burning
Easy-to-miss spots
- Under the chin, around the nostrils, the ears: anywhere reflected light hits
- Around goggle lines and on the lips
Practical kit
- Water-resistant sunscreen that holds up to sweat and wind
- A sunscreen stick for top-ups between lifts
- UV-blocking goggles or sunglasses and a neck warmer
- A lip balm with SPF
Also
- Cold and wind can weaken the skin barrier, so pack moisturizer too
