Galactomyces and bifida: what "ferment" essences actually contain
Fermented essences are one of the most recognizable K-beauty categories. Two names dominate the labels: galactomycesandbifida.
Galactomyces ferment filtrate A liquid left after a yeast-like fungus ferments a base (often rice). Brands describe it as brightening and texture-smoothing. It was made famous by a well-known Japanese essence and later by many Korean alternatives.
Bifida ferment lysate Made from broken-down bifidobacteria. It's usually marketed for resilience and a calm, even look, and it appears in many "first essences" and serums.
What "ferment" does and doesn't mean
- The product doesn't contain live bacteria or yeast; the liquid is filtered or broken down
- Brands say fermentation creates smaller, easier-to-absorb molecules; independent research on specific products is limited
- Results people report vary a lot, from "my favorite step" to "didn't notice anything"
Worth knowing
- A small number of people with fungal-acne-prone skin avoid certain ferments; opinions on this in forums are mixed
- Patch test if your skin is reactive
Are ferment essences a must in your routine, or a step you skipped?
