How to patch test a new product (without waiting a month)
A K-beauty haul is exciting, but opening five new products on the same night makes it impossible to tell which one caused a problem. A simple patch test helps.
A common home method
- Pick a small, discreet area: behind the ear, the side of the neck or along the jawline
- Apply a normal amount once or twice a day, the way you'd actually use it
- Keep going for several days; many people choose about a week for leave-on products
- Watch for itching, burning, redness or small bumps
Good habits around it
- Introduce one new product at a time, with a gap before the next
- Test leave-on products (serums, creams, sunscreens) more carefully than rinse-offs
- Test actives like acids or retinoids on the face itself later, since the face can react differently
Limits to know
- A clean patch test lowers the risk but doesn't guarantee zero reaction
- Clogged pores can take longer to show than a patch test runs
- A strong reaction, swelling or blistering is a reason to stop and see a doctor or pharmacist
Do you patch test, or do you go straight to the whole face?
