Is Korean skincare really better? An old thread says "it depends"

On Mobile01's women's forum in Taiwan, a discussion started in late 2020: the poster said their friends used to buy Western department-store brands such as Estée Lauder and Lancôme, but in recent years had found Korean skincare good too. Perhaps because skin changes with age, richer products from brands like Whoo and Sulwhasoo suited them well. The poster asked whether Korean skincare really works better, and whether others had noticed a difference.

Across three pages of replies, opinions fell into a few camps:

  • Fans: Korean products work well, do many things, and may even suit Asian skin better; some haul lots back from every trip to Korea, and one said centella products were consistently good.

  • Seasonal users: many said Korean skincare leans rich, great for autumn and winter, and they switch to lighter products in summer; some found it too rich to get used to.

  • It-depends camp: the most common answer was that it is personal; one person's treasure is another's poison, whatever the country.

  • Others noted that Korea's climate differs from Taiwan's, so textures naturally feel different, and that drugstore products can match luxury brands.

  • A few warned that some products are too heavy or leave a white cast.

The thread is a few years old, but the conclusion still seems to hold: no country is automatically better.

Desk note: Country of origin is not an ingredient. Rather than asking which country is better, check whether a texture suits your climate and season, and whether the formula contains anything you already know irritates you. For new products, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests testing on a small patch of the inner arm or elbow crease twice a day for 7 to 10 days first.

Roughly what share of your current skincare is Korean?
