A 'clean beauty' label lawsuit reopened an old question: what does clean even mean?

A California class action filed in October 2025 claims that some products under Ulta Beauty's Conscious Beauty banner contain ingredients the retailer's own Made Without list excludes, naming parabens and benzophenone. Ulta said it takes the program seriously and aims to be transparent. It is an allegation, not a ruling.

The case is less interesting than the argument it restarted. Clean has no legal definition in most markets, so every retailer and brand draws its own line.

What people on skincare forums tend to say:

• Some find clean labels a useful shortcut when they are sensitive or pregnant
• Many think the word mostly sells fear of safe, well-studied ingredients
• A lot of people now just read the full ingredient list and ignore badges

In Korea the equivalent buzzwords are things like EWG green grades and 'no-additives' lists, and they draw the same debate.
